Project Smiling Children is a humanitarian initiative of Humans for Peace Institution dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world who are born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate and who cannot access the specialized medical treatment they need because of poverty, geographic isolation, limited healthcare infrastructure, or lack of specialized services.
The project is based on a simple but powerful belief: every child deserves access to essential healthcare, dignity, inclusion, and the opportunity to smile with confidence, regardless of where they were born or their family's financial circumstances.
Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most visible congenital conditions affecting children. Beyond the physical appearance, untreated cleft conditions can create significant challenges with feeding, nutrition, speech, hearing, dental health, breathing, social interaction, and emotional well-being. Children may also experience bullying, discrimination, stigma, and social isolation. For families living in poverty, the cost of specialized surgery and related medical care can be impossible to afford.
In many communities, the challenge is not that the condition cannot be treated. The necessary surgical procedures are available and can dramatically improve a child's health and quality of life. The challenge is access. A child may live hundreds of kilometres from a specialized hospital, while the family may have no financial means to pay for surgery, transportation, accommodation, medical supplies, or follow-up care.
Project Smiling Children seeks to help close this gap.
Humans for Peace Institution will work with local and international partners to identify children who may benefit from treatment and connect them with qualified healthcare providers.
The project will seek to establish partnerships with hospitals, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, dentists, speech professionals, healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical and medical supply companies, community organizations, foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
Depending on the location and needs of each program, project activities may include:
The project will not replace existing healthcare systems. Instead, it will seek to strengthen access and connect existing resources with children who are currently being left behind.
Project Smiling Children aims to achieve measurable health and social outcomes.
The immediate outcome will be that eligible children who previously lacked access to treatment receive safe, professional surgical care at no cost to their families.
Expected outcomes include:
The project will track appropriate indicators such as the number of children assessed, number of surgeries completed, number of families supported, number of volunteers engaged, number of medical professionals involved, number of partner organizations, and follow-up outcomes where feasible.
The long-term goal is to build a sustainable program rather than conduct isolated medical interventions.
Humans for Peace Institution will seek to develop long-term relationships with hospitals, medical professionals, community organizations, donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
The project will also work toward developing a growing network of trained volunteers and supporters who can assist with future activities.
Where possible, local healthcare professionals and organizations will be involved so that knowledge, relationships, and capacity remain within the communities being served.
Sustainability will also depend on transparent fundraising, responsible financial management, appropriate patient selection, strong medical governance, proper documentation, and ongoing evaluation.
