Description

Ecobed Biotech is a Ugandan biotechnology manufacturing initiative using circular economy principles to convert food and agricultural waste into valuable products that address public health, agricultural productivity, environmental pollution, and rural livelihoods. Our model focuses on recovering biological resources that would otherwise be discarded and processing them into safe, useful products for households, farmers, livestock owners, and underserved communities.

1. Mosquito Repellent Skincare Products

Ecobed collects spoiled milk that can no longer enter the human food chain because of spoilage, poor storage, or market delays. Through controlled biotechnology processing, the milk is separated into liquid and solid fractions. The liquid fraction is further processed and combined with selected plant based bioactive ingredients during formulation. The resulting lotion and cream products are designed to provide skincare benefits together with mosquito repellency, creating an affordable bio based product for communities exposed to mosquitoes. We particularly target students, refugees, farmers, and underserved households where mosquito exposure is high and malaria remains a significant public health concern.

2. Bio Based Fuel Additive

The solid fraction recovered during the processing of spoiled milk is not discarded. It undergoes further processing to develop a bio based fuel additive. This approach allows Ecobed to extract value from different components of the same waste stream while reducing the quantity of dairy waste requiring disposal. The product is being developed as a renewable alternative to conventional petroleum derived additives, with the broader objective of improving fuel utilisation and reducing the environmental burden associated with conventional fossil fuel systems.

3. Nutritious Animal Feed

Ecobed uses Black Soldier Fly bioconversion to transform suitable organic food waste into valuable insect biomass. Organic food waste is collected and prepared as feedstock for BSF larvae under controlled conditions. The larvae consume the organic material and convert its nutrients into biomass rich in protein and other nutrients. The harvested biomass is processed into an animal feed ingredient.

4. Organic Fertilizer

The residual organic material remaining after BSF bioconversion is further processed into an organic fertilizer. Rather than creating another waste stream, Ecobed returns the remaining nutrients and organic matter to agriculture. The fertilizer is intended to support soil fertility, improve soil organic matter, and provide farmers with a locally produced agricultural input.

Expected Impact

The project creates multiple value streams from food and agricultural waste while supporting public health and sustainable agriculture. It aims to improve access to mosquito protection, reduce organic waste and associated environmental pollution, create alternative animal feed and fertilizer resources.

Project goals

Ecobed Biotech's overarching goal is to improve the health, agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience of underserved communities in Uganda through biotechnology and circular economy solutions. The project responds to interconnected challenges affecting rural and vulnerable communities, including malaria exposure, food and agricultural waste, declining soil fertility, high livestock feed costs, and limited access to affordable sustainable agricultural inputs.

A key goal is to contribute to malaria prevention among students, refugees, farmers, and other underserved populations by increasing access to mosquito repellent skincare products. These products are developed from recovered spoiled milk and plant based ingredients, transforming a dairy waste stream into a useful health and personal care product while promoting environmental sustainability.

The project also aims to improve agricultural productivity by providing farmers and livestock owners with locally produced organic fertilizers and nutritious animal feed. Through Black Soldier Fly bioconversion, organic food waste is converted into valuable animal feed, while the resulting organic residue is processed into fertilizer. This creates a circular relationship between food waste management, livestock production, and crop production.

Another important goal is to reduce the amount of food and agricultural waste entering disposal systems. By recovering and processing materials such as spoiled milk and organic food waste, Ecobed seeks to demonstrate that agricultural waste can become a valuable industrial resource rather than an environmental burden.

The project will also promote awareness and adoption of sustainable agricultural practices among farmers and community members. Through community engagement and education, beneficiaries will learn about waste segregation, organic soil management, sustainable livestock feeding, resource recovery, and the benefits of circular agricultural systems.

Results of the project

The project is expected to generate measurable health, agricultural, environmental, and socioeconomic benefits for participating communities. One key result will be increased access to mosquito repellent skincare products among students, refugees, farmers, and other underserved populations. By making these products more accessible, the project aims to strengthen personal protection against mosquito exposure and contribute to improved health and wellbeing in communities affected by malaria.

A second major result will be improved utilization of agricultural and food waste. Spoiled milk that would otherwise be discarded will be processed into useful product components, while organic food waste will be redirected into Black Soldier Fly bioconversion. This will demonstrate a practical circular economy model in which waste is recovered and converted into products with economic and social value.

The project expects to increase access to nutritious alternative animal feed for livestock owners. Feed produced through Black Soldier Fly bioconversion will provide a locally generated feed resource derived from organic waste, supporting livestock nutrition while reducing reliance on conventional feed sources. This is expected to contribute to healthier livestock and improved productivity for participating farmers.

The project will also produce organic fertilizer from the residual material generated through the insect bioconversion process. Farmers will gain access to locally produced organic agricultural inputs that can support soil fertility, improve soil health, and contribute to sustainable crop production. Over time, this is expected to contribute to improved agricultural productivity and greater resilience among participating farming households.

Another expected result is increased knowledge and adoption of sustainable agricultural and waste management practices. Farmers and community members will receive information and practical guidance on organic waste management, soil fertility, livestock nutrition, resource recovery, and circular agriculture. This knowledge will enable communities to make better use of locally available resources and reduce unnecessary waste.

The project is also expected to create economic opportunities throughout the value chain. Waste collection, processing, biotechnology production, packaging, distribution, and product sales can generate employment and enterprise opportunities, particularly for young people and communities involved in agriculture.

At an environmental level, the project will reduce the quantity of organic waste being improperly discarded and promote the recovery and reuse of biological resources. By converting waste into animal feed, organic fertilizer, skincare products, and other bio based products, Ecobed will demonstrate how biotechnology can reduce waste while creating new economic value.
