Kopila Valley School (KVS) is a carbon-neutral community school and open-source "living laboratory" in Surkhet, Nepal, a region heavily impacted by climate vulnerability and historical socio-economic marginalization. Working together with the community, our programs are disrupting traditional deficit-based narratives of rural development by positioning formerly marginalized youth and families as the primary innovators of regional climate resilience and green technology. In addition to a safe Children’s Home and green school, we run a holistic ecosystem of satellite programs that promote family wellbeing, provide career counseling for first-generation university students, and offer job skills and empowerment training to local mothers and female caregivers.

Operating on a net-zero campus, our sustainability activities span four key operational pillars:

<li>Green Living &amp; Infrastructure: Utilizing a 100% solar-powered campus built entirely from locally sourced rammed earth with natural bioclimatic insulation, a 300,000-liter rainwater harvesting system, and closed-loop wastewater recycling.</li>
<li>Ecological Consumption: Managing a zero-waste campus that diverts 87% of school waste from landfills through student-led composting, sorting, and an urban permaculture farm integrated with aquaponics.</li>
<li>Integrated Education &amp; Mentorship: Delivering a custom "Education for Sustainability" (EfS) curriculum that seamlessly fuses traditional ancestral agricultural wisdom with advanced digital literacy, coding, and STEM capabilities.</li>
<li>Knowledge Democratization: Open-sourcing our pedagogical toolkits and architectural frameworks via a digital library, hosting regional educator summits, and collaborating with government schools.</li>
</ol>
The target group consists of children from low-resource backgrounds facing extreme educational barriers, alongside local women and fellow social service professionals. The most significant expected result is a scalable, globally replicable institutional blueprint demonstrating how localized environmental stewardship can break cycles of systemic poverty in one generation, generate sustainable livelihoods, and transform regional environmental mindsets.
The academic and economic results of this approach are intertwined with the climate benefits and highly compelling. Students who previously had no access to education are graduating at a rate of 95% since our founding (100% in 2025 for both Grade 10 and Grade 12 exit exams). 63% of Kopila Valley School graduates pursue higher education, and students are continuing to careers in healthcare, education, hospitality, IT, journalism, and entrepreneurship, ending poverty for their families.
