Since 2020, Psychiatric Care Developmental Foundation has been2851 / 3000 implementing a comprehensive Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) project for gender-based violence (GBV) survivors and at-risk women and adolescent girls in Yemen. The project currently operates through four service locations in Ibb, Taiz, Sana'a, and Aden, including partnerships with Al Thawrah General Hospital and Neuro-Psychiatric Teaching Hospital. In addition, remote support is provided nationwide through hotline and tele-counselling services.
The project responds to the growing mental health crisis in Yemen, where years of conflict, displacement, economic collapse, and protection risks have severely affected the psychological wellbeing of women and girls. The project provides free, confidential, and survivor-centred services for vulnerable groups, including displaced women, women with disabilities, women-headed households, marginalized communities, and adolescent girls exposed to violence, trauma, and distress.
The project delivers both specialized and focused MHPSS services. Specialized services include psychiatric consultations, psychological assessments, medication management, individual psychotherapy, rehabilitative support, and inpatient emergency care where available. Focused psychosocial support services include basic counselling, psychological first aid, structured group activities, family and caregiver support, case management, psychoeducation, awareness sessions, and community reintegration support.
To improve access and reduce stigma, PCF integrates MHPSS services into existing public health institutions while also operating dedicated safe spaces for women and girls. This approach helps beneficiaries access care in a safer, more sustainable, and culturally appropriate environment.
The project also strengthens local capacity by training general practitioners, psychology students, psychosocial support workers, and service providers on mental health identification, psychosocial interventions, survivor-centred approaches, and referral pathways. Continuous clinical supervision and mentorship are provided to improve service quality and expand the availability of MHPSS support in underserved communities.
In addition, the project conducts community awareness activities on mental health, GBV, and protection issues to reduce stigma and encourage early help-seeking. Through partnerships with humanitarian actors, health institutions, and protection service providers, the project ensures integrated support and referral services for beneficiaries.
Since 2020, the project has directly reached more than 138,000 beneficiaries and continues to serve as one of the few accessible and specialized MHPSS initiatives for vulnerable women and girls in Yemen.

Provision of MHPSS services for GBV survivors and at-risk women and girls in Yemen

I am a Yemeni public health professional and humanitarian practitioner committed to improving access to health, protection, and psychosocial support for vulnerable communities affected by conflict and humanitarian crises.
I hold a Master’s degree in Public Health from Sana’a University. My academic and professional journey has gradually shifted from clinical health care toward public health, prevention, health systems, and community-based approaches to improving people’s wellbeing. This perspective has shaped my commitment to addressing not only individual health needs, but also the social, institutional, and structural barriers that prevent vulnerable people from accessing essential services.
I currently work with the Psychiatric Care Developmental Foundation (PCF), a Yemeni women-led civil society organization, where I contribute to grants, partnerships, programme development, reporting, and organizational development. Through this role, I have been closely involved in supporting projects that provide mental health and psychosocial support, protection, education, and other essential services to women, girls, children, and vulnerable communities in Yemen.
I am especially passionate about mental health and its integration into broader public health and community systems. Through my work with PCF, I have seen how limited access to specialized services, stigma, poverty, displacement, insecurity, and geographical barriers can prevent people from receiving the support they need. This experience has strengthened my commitment to developing practical and locally appropriate approaches that can continue to create impact even in challenging environments.
Beyond my organizational role, I am interested in research, youth and adolescent health, health promotion, and strengthening preventive approaches in low-resource settings. I believe that meaningful change comes from connecting evidence with practical action and empowering local actors to become part of the solution.
