The Moi University Dynamic Renewable Energy Innovation Park and Green Hydrogen, Ammonia and Fertilizer Research Hub (MUREPHAR) is a multi-phase renewable-energy, education and research initiative at Moi University in Kenya. It connects clean-energy infrastructure with practical education, applied research, international cooperation, capacity building and sustainable institutional development.
The initiative has progressed step by step. Phase I established approximately 30 kWp of solar-PV capacity and demonstrated the feasibility and value of renewable energy within the university environment. Its successful implementation also attracted interest from neighbouring institutions and schools that visited the project and explored similar solutions.
Building on this foundation, Phase II added approximately 51.7 kWp of grid-connected solar-PV capacity. Phases I and II therefore represent approximately 81.7 kWp of cumulative installed capacity at Moi University. Approximately KES 8 million in resources were mobilised across these phases, as recorded in Moi University's institutional recognition documentation.
The demonstrated success created a multiplier effect beyond the university. Further resource mobilisation contributed to completed projects including a 27.4 kWp installation for the Catholic Diocese, 11.6 kWp at St. Mary's Academy, a 2.8 kWp solar-pumping project, and efficient cooking solutions for two schools.
Phase III is the next development stage. Planned from September 2026 to June 2027, it will add approximately 84 kWp of solar-PV capacity. Upon completion, cumulative capacity from Phases I–III is expected to reach approximately 165.7 kWp.
The project is more than an electricity-generation initiative. It is intended to strengthen Moi University as a living laboratory where students, researchers, engineers and partners can engage with renewable energy through practical learning, monitoring, research, demonstration and innovation.
My role includes international partnership development, resource mobilisation, stakeholder engagement, and technical and project coordination between partners in Kenya and Germany.
Beyond Phase III, MUREPHAR provides a foundation for Moi University's wider long-term ambition of developing a renewable-energy ecosystem of up to 30 MW, together with future research opportunities in green hydrogen, ammonia and sustainable fertilizer technologies. The 30 MW ambition is a long-term vision and is not presented as already installed or funded.
